In January 2009, the chess team; Cheran (6M), Nilaa (5G), Chen (6R), Shagilan (5M), Harishaa (5GR), Vinosha (4K), Manan (2S), Sam (5GR) and our substitute Joe (6M) will be attending the chess competition at Colchester to represent Fairlop Primary School. Our chess instructor, Richard, will also be coming along. With Shagilan as our captain and Nilaa as our vice captain we have great hope for our team. Last year, Nilaa, won the Under 8’s and the year before she won the Under 7’s award. Also we won the competition last year and got to go to Pontins for two whole days on Saturday and Sunday. We hope to win it next year and the team gets to go to the holiday camp again because they thoroughly enjoyed it last year.

The members of chess club have been busy playing in tournaments since we have came back to School.
Shagilan played in the 40th Barnet Junior Tournament under 10 (21/09/2008) and finished a fantastic 3rd with 5 points from 6 games (5 wins 1 loss). This also qualified him to the prestigious London Junior Chess championship held just before Christmas.
Shagilan also played in a under 10 tournament at the New Hall School in Chelmsford coming 4th with 4 points from 6 games, this was another great result.
But the star of the tournament was Mernan also from chess club, who went to support his brother Shagilan but was asked to play in the under 8 section. The under 8 section was a player short after round 1 so Mernan stepped in at round 2 only playing 5 games. Every other player playing 6 games but Mernan still finished 3rd and has a trophy as well a great result.

National Primary School Chess Championship 2008
In June Fairlop Chess team took part in the National Primary School Chess Championship semi-final at Pontins Holiday Camp Hemsby in Norfolk over a weekend.
We qualified for this by coming 3rd in the Essex team tournament in Colchester back in January.
In the semi-final was 40 Schools 35 of them private Schools, many of these teach chess as part of the curriculum so we knew this was going to be a very tough tournament.
Each School plays 6 matches against other Schools 5 boards a match.
1 point for a win ½ a point for a drawn game, so if your team wins 3 games and loses 2 games the match score is 3-2. You get 3 points the other team gets 2 points.
Fairlop played 6 private Schools and won 3 matches drew 1 match and lost 2 matches.
For the Fairlop team to compete at this level was a fantastic achievement our final position was 23rd out of 40.

First 2008 Chess Competition - Colchester, Essex
On Saturday 26th January 2008, Ruqayyah, Ryan, Max, Shagilan, Sathiya and Nilaa all travelled to Colchester, representing Fairlop, to play in the National Primary Schools Chess Tournament. Some of us had a tough day whilst others had a simple one but team captain, Ryan had more than a tough one after playing some of the most difficult players in the competition! After getting through a successful day, we found that we had qualified to the semi-finals which is to be held all the way in Norfolk in mid-June earning ourselves a gleaming medal! We all were overwhelmed with relief and excitement even our chess coach Richard. Just a special thanks to Richard from all of his team for all his hard work, effort and support which made his chess team into champions!
